Since October children and families in Leeds-Grenville have had the opportunity to take part in the Read to Every Kid Every Day Challenge. Families were encouraged to read from a selection of 10 nominated children’s books and vote for their favourite. On January 30 the winning book was announced at an event held at the Brockville library and attended by a large gathering of children, families and community members.
With a record 2100 votes cast the book Moo! By David LaRochelle came out on top. Every Kid in our Communities coordinator Margaret Fancy announced the winning book which was read to the excited crowd by Mark Heffernan of the Brockville Police Department. Local entertainer Gerry Mitchell provided music for the event.

The Read to Every Kid Every Day project was launched seven years ago by Every Kid in our Communities of Leeds-Grenville to promote the importance daily reading to children. Children and parents are encouraged to read ten picture books selected by a team of librarians and early literacy specialists and then vote for their favourite book.

Read to Every Kid committee chair Margaret Williams commented: “The success of this campaign is due to a community collaboration of effort and support. Member organizations of the Every Kid in our Communities coalition including school boards, public libraries, Early Years Centres, children’s mental health, early language development specialists, public health unit, and childcare providers counties-wide all work to support the program.”  Any child who casts a vote has their name into a contest to win a prize.
