Step Into Kindergarten: SSL Pilot

SSLI Pilot Project in Gananoque and Landsdowne (chair; Margaret van Beers)

Mission: To promote truly meaningful inclusion of all children entering the school system through strong parent engagement practices.

Partners:  This project grew out of the work of the Leeds Grenville Lanark Special Needs Reference Group (LGL SNRG), and is the result of a collaborative effort on the part of the following agencies:

  • Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario
  • Child Development Centre
  • Development Services of Leeds and Grenville (DSLG)
  • Language Express
  • Lanark Leeds Grenville Health Unit
  • Ontario Early Years Centre
  • Upper Canada District School Board

Project 1:  Pathway to Kindergarten  (chaired by Tom Jordan)
Coming together of school boards (UCDSB, CDSBEO) and community agencies to streamline early communication to parents.  The long term aim of this group is to create  coordinated and consistent messages from school boards and community partners around the importance of registering children for school, and the importance of family involvement in the child’s education.

Project 2: Enhanced Kindergarten Registration (chaired by Harold Hess)
Schools and community agencies work together on the Kindergarten registration process, with a focus on services available to families

Project 3: Step into Kindergarten Summer Session(chaired by Margaret van Beers)
Planning one week summer program for children transitioning into kindergarten, and their families

Project 4: Evaluation (chaired by Gillian Jackson)
Developing a measure for determining success of our work; Includes parent and staff questionnaires; Reflects on data and plans for next steps
